Week 3 is about composition. I have been studying it but find that I must stop and think about it and then try to add in the things I have learned about metering and aperture and...well, you get the idea...the chewing gum and thinking at the same time feeling?

The first 3 photos are new and the 4th from a year or so ago in Wickford, RI. Each thumbnail will open a new window with the image The explanations of why I think it followed one of the rules(at least!) of composition will be numbered in the order of the photos.

  1. Cedar Pond at a very early hour(early enough to see the mist rising form the water)...the water fountain with its straight line upwards and then its reflected line draws attention to itself. It seems to me that the small curved string of ducks leads your eye to the reflected fountain line and then upward, and for me, back to the large rock and the cycle begins again...at least for me!
  2. Blithewold Mansion in Bristol, RI...situated on Narragansett Bay with a huge back lawn flowing from a terrace and garden seen at the bottom of the photo. The lone figure of my friend, appearing so small in this vast landscape, emphasizes the size of the lawn.

The second 2 photos use lines and angles.

  1. The frog in a small pond at Blithewold seemed very eager to pose for me the other day. He held on to the pad with his 'hands' and extended his back leg which gave me a great line for leading directly to his cute face! The focal point....which is also nicely placed on that upper right third spot.
  2. The lovely old clock in a window in Wickford Village , RI, is a souvenir of The Americas's Challenge of 1927! It is positioned in the right angle formed by the window casing which seems to be a good focal point for it.

There are only 4 photos to show here but a lot of learning! I spent a couple of hours going through my photo collection and deciding which images were following the rules of good composition. I feel better prepared for the next time I venture forth with my camera...by the way, the other morning, when I went out to take lots of pictures of Cedar Pond, I locked myself out! Left the keys on the dining room table....
