Pen Tool, Paths
and Bézier Curves

I am also taking "Learning to Swim" with Sara. The work is here.

After practising with the Pen Tool practice sheets, I continued and really got a good understanding, should say 'fee;ing' for creating and altering curves . The images to the left are some of the practice which I hope to eventually incorporate into custom brushes.

I found that using a grid gave a very good indication about how far to pull a handle in order to match up the sides of something symmetrical as can be seen in the heart below.

The heart was created from a 200x200 pixel ellip[se, the anchor points of which were changed with the Convert Point Tool which produced the handles for pulling the curves to place. Once the stroke of the heart was changed to an Outline stroke which made it then capable of receiving a fill of gradient, pattern or color.I used a Gingham Pattern for the stroke fill and Symbols of daisies to finish. In line with the old saying I chose to use, I made a scatter brush of a petal I drew.
The fruit were made using the ellipse as a base and the Convert Point Tool and Direct Selection Tool to drag out the curves. Gradients were used as fill, with some Effects applied.

The plate is using the idea of the Outline Stroke learned from the heart.

I wanted to make some blueberries and then to further enhance them in Photoshop or Painter. I ended up using Painter because I wanted to try out the idea of a painting starting with the Illustrator drawing.

The berries, after being saved as a .psd, and then painted on with cloning brushes, oil brushes, acrylics, etc!

I really had fun with this lesson and had to force myself to quit so that I could do other things needing to be done!

An imitation of the LL Bean blueberry dish.I used the blueberries on a dish, again with the Outline Strokes ( a few of them with Drop shadows, too) and Gradient fill in the center. It reminds me of blueberry dishes I bought at LL Bean last year.
