Working with Type

This week's lesson includes the anatomy of Type, working with the type tools, text in and on a path, type on a circle. Also, by creating outlines and ungrouping and using the Knife Tool there become available just about any possibility you might have for filling and stroking as you might have with any object created with the Pen Tool! Very exciting...and so, we have gradient text, pattern filled text and a text image.

I am also taking "Learning to Swim" with Sara. The work is here.

Text on a Path

To the left is an example of text on a path which demonstrates a drawing of a path to represent the birch tree talked about in Robert Frost's poem, Birches. After creating the type, using the Direct Selection Tool I was able to select the path and stroke it and then , using Baseline Shift, move the text so that it would be visible above the stroke. I used the Brush and the Pen Tool to add branches and some ground as a base for the tree.

Area Type

This is an example of filling a container with text. I used a font to get the shape of the cat and then traced it with the Pen Tool to get the text container.

Another example is the clouds below.

The last 2 examples are creating outlines, ungrouping the type and then editing the points to make an image (for the 'run' type) and filling and transforming the letters of a word with gradients, patterns or different color (as in the metallic gradient word.
