This effect uses two different colors for the borders of the nav buttons. A light gray for left and top, and a dark gray for the right and bottom on the initial link state. Then swap the colors for the hover to get the roll over effect of a button being pushed.
I wanted some spring colors and so sampled from a photo of lilacs to get the three colors for this page.
