Yummy English Muffin with buttery substitute and sugar free Maple Syrup... October 12, 2003I love good food! I also have Type I Diabetes. Food can be very important to a person with Diabetes. Too much, too little or the wrong kind can create all sorts of problems. So, knowing what is good and what you need to keep things balanced are the most important things a diabetic can learn! And, the food intake, response can be different for each person! It also depends on your activity level or lack of it!

I have a MiniMed 508 insulin pump and love it! Mine is the Sapphire Blue and I have had it for almost 4 years...actually, 3 years and 5 months, but who is counting! More information here at Insulin Pumpers.org

Because I have a pump, I have much more flexibility in deciding when I can eat. Before pumping , that was not the case and there was many a time when I suffered unconscious hypoglycemia events and woke up in the back of the rescue truck. (I am hypo-unaware) Now, I know my own needs for insulin very well, my basal rates are set and things go very smoothly! It sounds easy enough but there was a long struggle involved to get where I am now. It continues to be well worth it.

For a Type I like me, insulin sensitivity is the problem as opposed to insulin resistance in a Type II, In a day I use only about 24 to 27 units of H. A Type II would use that much for a snack. The pump allows me to break down a unit of insulin (that is about the size of a small drop) into tenths of a unit. There is no needle that can let you deliver that small an amount of insulin! But my pump does.

Many people think that the pump is an implant, It isn't every 3 or 4 days I must remove the cannula and put in a new one in a new site. Keeping your skin healthy is very important for pumping well. Also, monitoring becomes even more important...testing 8 times a day is necessary so that I know how things are...if the pump were to malfunction, a Type I could go into DKA within hours. Or, as has happened to me, bottom out in the 20's!

I started this simply to show some of the foods I eat at different meals and next thing I knew it was growing into a pumping page! That's okay! It answers a lot of questions about pumping...it is not implanted nor automatic. Has its risks but, when taken care of properly, is (in my estimation) the best way for a Type I!

Jello, for dessert on days I want to be careful of food intake...good too!
Breakfast plate, just supplement with V8 juice or some fruit... A pretty good lunch! Vegetable soup...for a snowy day...recipe here, just click! The soup with a grilled cheese sandwich...I like that!
Boca Italian sausage, sauteed red peppers in a roll...delicious, I think! Peach for part of dessert... Followed by chocolate pudding...sugar free but very good! Afternoon snack..peanut butter, English muffin, sugar free jelly Dinner!
