Week 2 worked closely with the 3D Filter in Illustrator CS 2. By starting with a single line, then using the Revolve option, 3 D appearing images can be rendered. It is also possible to use pre-created symbols to map labels or art to the 3D objects.

I am also taking Getting Your feet Wet with Sara at this time!

The Image Collage of 3 D Objects

The bubble wand at left, created in last week's lesson, is reappearing this week with Bevel and Extrude applied to it. Amazingly enough, it appears to be 3D!

For the collage below, I made different outlines using the drawing tools and then applied the 3D Filter to those drawings.

  • The globe, billiard balls, texture mapped ball are created by drawing a perfect ellipse and then using the scissors to cut it in half, deleting one side and using the remaining side in Revolve to create the ball.
  • The pattern, globe maps, stripes and 8 for the 8 ball are symbols which needed to be created and placed in the Symbols Palette in order to be mapped to the surface of the 3 D balls.
  • The bubble soap bottle is a Pen Tool drawing (1/2 of the bottle shape) stroked with the bottle color and then revolved.
    • The bubble soap label was created with a blend of 3 rectangles, some text and a scatter brush. It was then dropped into the Symbols Palette to be available for mapping
  • The top of the bottle is a set of strips, colored every other one darker and then ,as a Symbol, mapped to the top of the bottle.
  • The bottle lid, a circle, 3D Effect, Extrude and Bevel...
  • The bubbles are circles with a pastel gradient fill, reduced transparency and drawn on highlights.

The objects in the collage are not meant to be portrayed in true proportion to one another...simply a collection of the exercises for this week's lesson
