Using Artists' Oil Brushes, Instructor Madeleine Jacobs

Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6

After realizing that the Painter class I began in was probably a bit basic with emphasis on the interface, I had asked for a change and am now enrolled in Using Artists' Oil Brushes. My first work in the other course is here, pencil drawings of cats.

I started by using the original photo provided. My brushes of choice were the Dry Brush, Dry Palette Knife for blending the colors, also the Grainy Dry Brush and Blender.

My Interpretation

Evaluation:

You can get lost in the amount of time spent, can't you ? I do!

I really liked how you put in tiny leaves for the tree on the left. And you made the ocean come alive allowing it to explode against the rocks you created on the right....very neat!
but you might want to add more value. Now, since you have great detail on the left with your tree, you can begin adding some more highlights. Let your brush suggest the sun hitting the tips of a few leaves and branches. For the same reason, you may want to lighten up the brush/shrub in the front. The values are way to dark here, and you want to lighten them up a bit.

One thing that was pretty neat were the flowers in the foreground, but to balance them with the ones in the midground, you might want to enlarge them, or reduce the ones in the front. This will allow the viewer's eye to see the color in the front and then gravitate to the colors it sees in the midground because they match.

Creative work!

Thank you, Madeleine.

Those were very good suggestions, but I am not sure I was able to do it all! I know that I have managed to add some value to the tree and grasses and the sky as well. Just not so sure I have improved the situation, though!
