Using Artists' Oil Brushes, Instructor Madeleine Jacobs

Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6

After realizing that the Painter class I began in was probably a bit basic with emphasis on the interface, I had asked for a change and am now enrolled in Using Artists' Oil Brushes. My first work in the other course is here, pencil drawings of cats. All thumb nails will open to a new window.

Week 3 is doing portraits.

I used many involved doing portraits. I used several brushes:

  • Wet Brush
  • Soft Blender Brush
  • Blender Brush
  • Blender Palette Knife

Typical for me, spent a whole lot of time on the details and then end up covering them with other stuff. But, in the end, I did use the Detail Airbrush to do things like lashes, highlights.

I know I should have gone with the photo, but I wanted to get a painted look that really didn't look like the photo anymore. I did accomplish that, but...

I used some Surface Texture, lightly. Thank you for the inspiration, Madeleine. Here is the original of Lauren, taken in a local apple orchard, looking very pensive. I may not have gotten the eyes looking in just the right direction.

Read Madeleine's evaluation here. It will open in a new window.
