Using Artists' Oil Brushes, Instructor Madeleine Jacobs

Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6

After realizing that the Painter class I began in was probably a bit basic with emphasis on the interface, I had asked for a change and am now enrolled in Using Artists' Oil Brushes. My first work in the other course is here, pencil drawings of cats. All thumb nails will open to a new window.

Week 4 is doing portraits, using what we learned with last week's assignment.

I seem to be developing an inclination to sue certain brushes more than others. I used several brushes, same as last week, with a couple added to the group:

  • Wet Brush
  • Soft Blender Brush
  • Blender Brush
  • Blender Palette Knife
  • Clumpy Brush
  • Bristle Brush

I have discovered how wonderful it is to use the Color Mixer! Fun for me anyway. I found that if I blend together 2 or 3 color samples, then use the eyedropper with the circle on it, it will, if I hold the sampler close to where the colors intersect, pick up a bit of all and will paint with those colors with the outer bristles showing the variations of sampled color! I particularly liked that for the hair.

I chose the pretty little girl with the black hair. I loved the colors in this. I added to the top of the head where it had been cropped and then cropped off some from the bottom. The background was done with the Wet Brush with the varying sampled colors from the Color Mixer which I described above.

I enjoyed working on this! But, I must say that if I had more time I would rework the arms, hands and flowers. I know that I could do better with those, and admit I had to rush them.

This is the original photo which was used for the painting below.
This is the finished painting of the little girl.
Rework with a try at more highlights in the hair.
I reworked the image, trying to add the highlights. I had attempted that in the first painting but, again, lack the skills to do it well. I did allow myself to use some other brushes, particularly the Scratchboard Rake and the Airbrush. I had been trying to stay within the Artists' Oil brushes. I did notice that in the photo there seemed to be a lot of reflected green on the left side and that the bit of highlight on the top of the hair was sort of bluish. Madeleine's appraisal here. It will open in a new window.
