On Friday, September 26, 2003, we visited the Port of Galilee, the Roger C. Wheeler Beach and Point Judith Lighthouse in Rhode Island with friends from Iowa. It was a beautiful early fall day with plenty of sunshine and warm air. We were on the jetty at the time that all the fishing boats were coming in with their catch of the day. We saw cormorants, sand pipers and gulls. The gulls were swooping around the fishing boats looking for something to eat.

As we walked the beach, we saw clumps and piles of seaweed. It was low tide and there were many large quahogs lying on the beach, still probably good for taking home to make chowder. We didn't take any, wondering at the safety of eating shellfish that were just lying there on the beach that way, instead of still buried in the mud. As a point of interest, the name, quahog, comes from the Narragansett Indian word, poquaûhock. You can find out more about the quahog here. Quahog Fact Sheet

After walking the beach and taking photos, we went on to Point Judith and took some photos of the Point Judith Lighthouse. We then drove to Wickford, to Champlin's Fish Market, to buy lobsters, clams and mussels to take home for dinner.

The photos below begin with Galilee, then the photo of the Point Judith Lighthouse followed by pictures at the Seafood Market. There is a very special photo of a blue lobster. I wasn't so sure just what the big deal was about a blue lobster but have since found out that it happens about 1 in 2, 000,000 lobsters! Marine scientists believe that a genetic condition causes the blue pigmentation. I didn't know we were photographing such a rare specimen! Look for the blue lobster near the bottom row of photos. Also, a supersized lobster!

Two days earlier, we had visited Martha's Vineyard and there are photos of that day here.
