Night Time Shots and Hot Pixels |

| After shooting some photos of my cats with low light(which means longer exposure time) using the Olympus C-3040Z, I was surprised to see the colored pixels and all over graininess of the shots. Before considering taking the camera to the shop to what was wrong, I did a search on the internet for any information I could find about this hot pixel issue. I was relieved to learn that there is nothing wrong with the camera but that hot pixels are a result of the long exposure time necessary in low light. The camera is taking longer to record, thus heating up and allowing the pixels to be part of the exposure. You can read about it at these sites. In this link, there is pretty much the same explanation with a shareware program for removing the hot pixels from the image. I tried the program and was not too impressed with the results and so will not even show them here. Next, on the suggestion of jeaniesa (participant on the discussion board at myjanee.com), I downloaded Neat Image. I was pleased with the results but still needed more reduction in the hot pixels. I have used Photoshop's native Noise: Dust & Scratches, one pass and was able to rid the image of the remaining hot pixels. It is my estimation that, given some more time to become accustomed to the capabilities of Neat Image, it may be able to remove all the pixels. I cannot say how a printed image will look, have not tried that yet. Conclusions:

| Below is the full photo with the area of detail having been taken from Celia's back. This is the one with the corrections. Something else to keep in mind, when the image is reduced from 2048X1536, to 400X 300, much of the hot pixel noise is not noticeable! It is the details that tell the story!
I am going to spend more time with Neat Image because it has some options I have yet to figure out! |
